About Holi:
Predominantly celebrated in South Asia, Holi is recognized as the one of the most vivid and joyous festival. Taking place at the beginning of Spring, Holi celebrates the triumph of good over evil as per the story of Prahlad (a devoted worshipper of one of the Hindu gods, Vishnu) who prevailed despite his evil father, King Hiranyakashyap’s and his demonstress sister, Holika’s effort to destroy him.
Why colour:
The significance of colour comes from the story of one of the Hindu Gods, Krishna and his lover Radha. Krishna was cursed with blue skin by a demon. Worried that his fair-skinned consort, Radha would not love him, he painted her with any colours he chose thus leading to the festival of colours. As a way to celebrate, people throw gulal (coloured powder) on each other as a way to shower them with good spirits and positivity. Red dye symbolizes love, fertility, and matrimony. Blue represents Krishna, while green stands for new beginnings.
